Introduction about NeelKanth Mahadev

                          "Om Namah Shivay"

Samudra Manthan Story

Samudra Manthan(Churning of ocean) is mentioned in the puranas.Once king of gods Indra was on his elephant when he met Muni Durvasa who handed a special garland.Lord Indra took the garland and gave it to the elephant that garland. The elephant irritated by the smell of the flower threw the garland in the ground.Muni Durvasa felt insulted as the garland was a dwelling of Sri(fortune) and should be accepted as prasad.Angry with Lord Indra Muni Durvasa cursed Indra that Devas will be their strength ,power and fortune.

Puranas mention this as one of the reason for "Samudra Manthan".Since devas were defeated by demons ,so devas felt the need for immortality .Devas with the help of lord vishnu hatched a plan to churn the ocean to have nectar of immortality .

The task of churning Nectar of mortality was very difficult task and required efforts of both devas and demons to churn the ocean.Next question came how to churn the ocean ? This is when  Lord vishnu took the second avatar as Kurma Avatar(Tortoise). Mount  Mandaranchal  was kept over Kurma Avatar and king of serpents Vasuki became the rope for churning.

During the churning Moon,Goddess Lakshmi ,Kamdhenu were born and  also  lot of precious ratna, herbs were produced. But before the nectar could come  ,Halahala(poison) came out  .The Halahala was so poisness that it could kill everyone ,which caused panic among devas and asuras.

This is when devas and asuras  approached  "Shiv Shankar Mahadeva" for help and Bholenath Shiv Shankar drank that poison happily .This Halahala was so poisness that it changed the color of throat to blue. This is the reason why Shiv Shankar is also said as "NeelKanth Mahadev" where "Neel" means blue and "Kanth" means throat.
